2010 Treaure Hunt
The Norfork Lake Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Jordan Marina held the Annual Underwater Treasure Hunt on Sand Island on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Fifty-six divers and 127 people overall turned out to participate in the annual event to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Diver’s Alert Network.
Divers searched underwater for numbered soda cans and turned them in for prizes. The total value of all prizes distributed was $7,067.40. All divers received a t-shirt for participating. Prizes varied from scuba equipment, sunglasses, t-shirts and hats to boat rentals and free lodging.
While spotters watched from land, the Gamaliel Fire Department boat kept an eye on things from the water.
Children and families of the divers were kept busy while the divers were underwater. Out of eight Sandcastle entries, the Hickman kids were declared the winners. The Hickmans built an excellent sandcastle – complete with boat launch and a marina. Meanwhile, the Dunn’s and the Weber kids completed all of the Scavenger Hunt items on their list.
This event could not have been a success without the sponsorship of many donors. A special “Thank You” goes out to SOUTHBank and J & T Dive Shop.
Faithful volunteers, Homer Thompson, Tommy French, Bobby and Linda Smith made sure that paperwork was completed and everyone was accounted for. Ben Eskridge and Lauren organized prizes. It was HOT and still all the volunteers labored on!
Thanks to everyone for making this a fun and safe event! Together, we can make a difference! Save the date! Next year’s Treasure Hunt will be Saturday, August 20th, 2011. Thanks again to ALL our sponsors!
